"Clues to the Blues: Treating Depression" will address depression.
On March 15, Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Dr. Karen Swartz and Aspen biochemist
Dr. Phyllis Bronson will speak about a disease that today affects some 18 million
Americans. During any six month period, approximately 6.6 percent of women and
3.5 percent of men will have a depressive disorder. Secondary symptoms abound:
Men with clinical depression are more than twice as likely to develop coronary
artery disease as their non-depressed counterparts, and depression among teens
has been linked to poor school performance, truancy, alcohol and drug abuse,
running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.
